I would probably cite pencil as my favourite, especially when you mix up hard and soft ones and smudge bits here and there or get sharp lines to contrast in texture. But for colour picture books I've recently discovered the joy of mixing up different media: diluted acrylics to give the bright shades, watercolours for more subdued areas, charcoal for smudgy shadows and coloured pencils for outlines and textures. In other work I've also experimented with pen and ink and collage. There is still so much more to explore and I hope to keep doing so!
